LAGOS, March 20, 2003 -- Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL) today declared force majeure following the shut-in of production from all of its onshore and swamp locations in the Western Niger Delta as a result of the ongoing unrest in the area. The total amount of CNL production now shut-in is 140,000 barrels of oil per day, which has impacted the company's ability to deliver on the rest of its March and April 2003 lifting programmes.

The shut down of the onshore locations was one of the precautionary measures taken by the company to ensure the safety of its workers and guard against environmental damage in the case of an escalation of the situation. The company has, since the beginning of the unrest, also suspended crew change movements to the Escravos Operations area and restricted its other operations-related movements on the waterways as additional precautionary measures.

The company continues to assist and airlift people from communities around its Escravos Terminal who were displaced as a result of the unrest. So far, the company has moved hundreds of people to safety.
