"Bruce has been an effective leader during his career at Chevron and was integral in guiding us through the complexities of the merger of Chevron and Texaco," said Chairman and CEO Dave O'Reilly. "We wish him a long and happy retirement," said O'Reilly.
Marsh will be succeeded by Thomas R. Schuttish, currently assistant general tax counsel. Schuttish will assume his new responsibilities September 1.
A native of Carmel, Calif., Schuttish, 54, graduated from San Jose State University with a bachelor's degree in accounting. He earned a law degree from the University of California at Davis and a master's degree in law specializing in tax from New York University. Schuttish joined Chevron in 1980 as a senior tax attorney and has worked in a succession of positions in the corporate Tax Department. He assumed his current position in 2001.
Marsh, 59, a native of New Orleans, La., graduated from the University of Texas in 1966 after earning business and law degrees and began his career as a tax attorney with Humble Oil Co. He joined Gulf Oil Corp. in 1971 as taxation director in Houston.
He held a variety of positions of increasing importance in the Gulf Tax Department, including regional director of taxes -- eastern hemisphere, based in London. Following Gulf's merger with Chevron in 1984, he was appointed general tax counsel for Chevron U.S.A. Inc. He was named assistant general tax counsel of legal and legislation for Chevron Corp. in February 1988. In 1994, Marsh was named general tax counsel and an officer of Chevron Corp. As general tax counsel, he guided and directed the tax activities throughout the corporation and served as manager of ChevronTexaco's Tax Department.
Marsh represented the company with many organizations including the American Petroleum Institute, the Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association, the Texas Taxpayers and Research Association, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Tax Council, and the Tax Foundation.
