ChevronTexaco Names Alan Preston Vice President, Human Resources

SAN RAMON, Calif., June 5 -- ChevronTexaco Corp. (NYSE: CVX) today announced that Alan R. Preston has been named vice president, human resources, effective July 1. Preston replaces John Bethancourt, who has been appointed executive vice president of ChevronTexaco technology and services.

Preston currently serves as general manager, global remuneration, for ChevronTexaco, a position he has held since 2001. He is responsible for the company's corporate-wide compensation, benefit and executive pay policies and programs. In his new position, Preston will report to Dave O'Reilly, ChevronTexaco chairman and chief executive officer.

"With more than 20 years experience in human resources here at ChevronTexaco, Alan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this position," said O'Reilly. "His expertise is key to our ensuring that our human resources policies and activities are world class."

Preston has held numerous human resources positions of increasing responsibility including general manager, compensation and organization from 1999 to 2001 and general manager, human resources for Chevron Products Co., from 1995 to 1999. Beginning in 1994, Preston served as project coordinator, human resources cost/value alignment study, and was responsible for coordinating an 18-month review and restructuring of Chevron's human resources products and services.

Preston has also served as manager of human resources strategy and policies, manager of compensation and manager of management planning for Chevron Corp.

A native of Bay City, Mich., Preston attended Delta College and Michigan State University. Upon graduation in 1973, he joined Chevron's engineering department and worked on various refinery-related projects until 1981 when he transferred to the human relations department.

Preston is currently a member of the Compensation Council of the Conference Board and the World at Work organization.
