SAN RAMON, Calif., Jul 21, 2003 -- ChevronTexaco today announced the creation of ChevronTexaco Energy Technology Company (ETC). Mark B. Puckett has been named to lead ETC effective August 1. Puckett currently serves as president of ChevronTexaco Exploration and Production Technology Company (EPTC).
The new company combines EPTC and ChevronTexaco Energy Research and Technology Company (ERTC). EPTC and ERTC supply upstream and downstream technologies for ChevronTexaco businesses, respectively. Gary M. Masada, current president of ERTC, has been named president and chief information officer of ChevronTexaco's Information Technology Company (ITC) effective August 1. Masada will replace ITC President and Chief Information Officer David M. Clementz, who has elected to retire after 30 years of service.
The company's two other technology companies -- ChevronTexaco Technology Ventures and ChevronTexaco Information Technology -- will continue under their current organizational structures.
ETC was created to provide an integrated approach to managing technology resources for ChevronTexaco's global business portfolio. It is intended to improve long-term technology planning and enhance application of technology capabilities across all business segments to meet current and future business needs. The new company will support key corporate strategies to increase upstream growth and transform downstream into a highly competitive business. It also will address the needs of new businesses such as Global Gas and support early-stage businesses such as hydrogen storage.
"The combination is a natural extension of our past successful efforts to integrate both upstream and downstream technology capabilities," said Don Paul, vice president and chief technology officer of ChevronTexaco. "We've seen significant benefit from combining traditional manufacturing technologies into major oil field capital projects."
ETC will have major technology centers in Richmond, Calif., San Ramon, Calif., and Bellaire, Texas, as well as employees in office locations in Houston, Texas. Puckett will be based in Bellaire, Texas, and will report to Don Paul.
"Because of his broad experience as both the President of a technology company and as Managing Director in international E&P, Mark is exceptionally well-qualified to lead the new company," said Paul.
Puckett assumed his current position upon the formation of ChevronTexaco Corp., Oct. 9, 2001. As president of Exploration and Production Technology, he is responsible for exploration and production technology development and application for domestic and international upstream operating companies. Prior to the merger, he performed similar responsibilities as president of Chevron Petroleum Technology Co., a position he began in April 2001.
A native of DeKalb, Texas, Puckett earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Texas A&M University in 1973 and completed the Tuck Executive program at Dartmouth College in 1997.
He joined Chevron in 1973 as a construction engineer in Lafayette, La. After serving in positions of increasing responsibility in engineering, drilling and operations, he was named operations superintendent for the West Texas division in 1985. In 1986, he was appointed manager of the oil recovery division for Chevron Oil Field Research Co., in La Habra, Calif., and in 1990, district manager of Kern River in Bakersfield, Calif.
From 1991 to 1994, Puckett served as managing director for Chevron Niugini Pty. Ltd., headquartered in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. In 1995, he was appointed managing director of Chevron Overseas Petroleum Inc.'s Angola/Zaire business unit based in Luanda, Angola. In August 1997, this role was expanded to managing director of the Southern Africa business unit, responsible for exploration and production activities in Angola, Congo, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Puckett is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers and the College of Engineering Advisory Council at Texas A&M University. Additionally, he has served as a director of various professional, civic and educational organizations.
